I’ve scanned one of the more complex of my hand drawn game levels, created in several stages to test out a 2D side scrolling platform game engine I have been working on (whilst running UK Drupal web design company Curve).

First of all I came up with a really rough concept level design on a scrap of paper (no-one can over estimate the value of scraps of paper!). Some tweaks were needed, but this concept contains the basic ideas for puzzle mechanics within the level design.

After I was satisfied with the level design, I planned it out a little more accurately on an A4 piece of squared paper. Graph paper has too many squares. In fact it is worth getting hold of squared paper that is as feint as possible, so that there is more contrast with your drawn design.

If you want to become a member, you need to register as a prospector, the wait until you are invited by an existing member. Makes it feel kind of exclusive and there are many arguments for and against this kind of closed system.

Anyway, I spent a few hours hunting around and found that Twitter is the best place to go if you want one “now!” rather than waiting around indefinitely for an invite. That’s what I did, and as soon as I got my Dribbble invite, I immediately got to work uploading a handful of designs. Here’s a snaphshot of my Dribbble profile page.

Peter McClory Dribble profile (June 2011)

I like the way the Dribbble community works, and the site has a really clean, minimal feel. Plus, there are a lot of very talented individuals who inspire and motivate me to push myself and the Curve team a bit further when it comes down to designing for our clients and internal projects.

I spent last weekend and today putting together a short Halloween platform game. Collect the pumpkins, sweets (candy), cupcakes and find the keys to open the doors of the castle. Literally put together in 24 hours, and half of that time was spent drawing the game.

Explore the infinite, quirky hand-drawn neon world at night time, collecting candy, pumpkins and cupcakes. Once you have found all the pumpkins, the pumpkin key will be revealed, somewhere in the level, same goes for the cupcakes. You must retrieve the right key to unlock one of the doors of the castle, where you will find whether you are …rubbish, MONSTROUS, or some creature of the night?

The music was created on my Korg Electribe EMX-1.

I’ll appreciate comments, good and bad.

I’m preparing for my first half marathon, which is on 2nd October this year. I’m raising money for the Orphans in Need charity as part of this personal milestone.

Orphans sponsored by Orphans in Need in India

It’s tricky to select a particular charity, but I do feel passionate about Orphans in Need. The charity was established in order to help some of the worlds most vulnerable and needy people. They are committed to the alleviation of all forms of poverty and deprivation, in all parts of the globe. However, the organisation’s primary focus is on orphans and widows; often the weakest members of any society, and the most affected by the scourge of poverty.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate – I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.

You can easily sponsor me directly through my custom JustGiving page by clicking the link below:
