Hand drawn organic game level design for side scrolling platformer

I’ve scanned one of the more complex of my hand drawn game levels, created in several stages to test out a 2D side scrolling platform game engine I am working on in my spare time.

First of all I came up with a really rough concept level design on a scrap of paper (no-one can over estimate the value of scraps of paper!).  Some tweaks were needed, but this concept contains the basic ideas for puzzle-y elements in the level design.

After I was satisfied with the level design, I planned it out a little more accurately on squared paper. Read the rest of this entry »

Watching TV Doggy Style

January 2nd, 2010

The family dog, Wallace, likes to watch TV. Well at least it’s only a big old CRT and not a more delicate flat screen.

Anyway, what better way to showcase his doggy style TV watching than with the trailer for Hotel for Dogs?!

Sound will most definitely enhance this video.

Step by step guide to drawing a realistic head using shadow shapes

August 9th, 2008

Portraits can be one of the hardest pieces of artwork to get ‘right’.

This is because we all spend a lot of time looking at other people’s faces. We are familiar with the array of shapes and proportions, but is seems to be difficult to put them accurately onto paper without preconceptions.

Braid – New Puzzle Platform Adventure Game for Xbox Live Arcade (not another shooter!)

July 1st, 2008

Braid is an XBLA (Xbox Live Arcade) puzzle platform adventure game, official release date 6th August 2008 on Xbox Live Arcade.

At first, and from the screen-shot below, Braid appears to be similar to any other platform game, with no apparent difference other than the look of the graphics.

However, the game revolves around puzzle-solving largely by using the innovative ability of the player to rewind time at any point – even after dying. In fact, for reasons initially unexplained, the first world which the player encounters, is World 2. Read the rest of this entry »

Double Wedding Portrait Drawing for Diamond Anniversary

July 1st, 2008

This is a recent double portrait drawing I created from an old wedding photograph for my grandparent’s 60th (Diamond) wedding anniversary.

The focus is on the faces and expressions, with a much rougher, sketchy style blending into the clothing and flowers in the shoulder region of the picture.

The mix of texture (in terms of the pencil strokes used) is intended to give a more interesting range of marks on the paper from a purely abstract point of view.
